What the time duration calculator measures

This tool is designed for questions such as how long a shift lasted, how much time a reservation uses, how long a trip took, or how many hours separate two appointments. It compares the two endpoints as an elapsed interval. Include the date whenever the period can cross midnight; entering only clock times can hide a full day or more.

How to read the result

The primary result is expressed as calendar duration units: days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Supporting totals make the answer easier to use in timesheets and schedules. For example, Monday 09:30 to Tuesday 14:15 is 1 day, 4 hours, and 45 minutes, equal to 28 hours and 45 minutes or 1,725 minutes.

Rules and edge cases

The end must be at or after the start, both values must be valid date-time entries, and the calculation can cross midnight, month-end, or year-end. A same-moment interval is zero. This calculator compares the entered values; it does not infer a different time zone. For location-to-location conversions or daylight-saving transitions, use the Time Zone Converter. Time zones and daylight saving

When both values come from the same local clock, the result follows those entered clock values. If the endpoints come from different cities, first convert them to a common context and note whether a daylight-saving change occurs between them. That avoids treating a displayed clock time as a universal moment.
