Rooftop Solar Subsidy by Indian State: What to Check Before Applying
Rooftop solar subsidy in India has two layers that should not be mixed. The national PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana provides central financial assistance for eligible residential households through the national portal. State governments, electricity regulators, DISCOMs and energy agencies then control local application, interconnection, metering, documentation and any additional state programme. A state-wise answer is therefore a checklist, not one permanent rupee amount.
The national residential assistance to verify first
The PM Surya Ghar portal currently describes central assistance of ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third kW, with total residential assistance capped at ₹78,000 for systems above 3 kW. Treat these figures as the scheme structure to verify on the live official portal, not as an automatic payment. Eligibility, vendor choice, commissioning, documents, sanctioned load, inspection and disbursement conditions still apply. Commercial and industrial customers should not assume the residential benefit applies to them.
Why state-wise subsidy pages can be misleading
A state may advertise a capital incentive, a generation-based incentive, a RESCO model, a special programme for a customer group, or only the national scheme routed through local DISCOMs. A policy document can remain online after its budget, deadline, cap, or application process has changed. Look for the issuing authority, notification date, eligible consumer class, programme closing date, application channel and whether the benefit is additional to PM Surya Ghar. Net metering is a separate question from subsidy and depends on the DISCOM, sanctioned load, transformer capacity, system size and current regulation.
State and territory checklist
For Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal, check the state renewable-energy agency and the DISCOM serving the address. Confirm the current residential portal, approved vendors, sanctioned-load rule, net-metering process, meter charges and any state top-up. For Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Sikkim and other smaller or special-category markets, use the state energy department and utility as the primary source because availability, grid constraints and programme windows can differ. Do not copy a subsidy amount from another state.
Delhi and Telangana illustrate why local verification matters
The official Delhi Solar Portal publishes PM Surya Ghar information, a Delhi state-subsidy section, application links and current Delhi Solar Energy Policy amendments. Telangana’s TGREDCO rooftop page explains DISCOM approval and net-metering conditions, but its public page also contains historical subsidy language. These examples show why an applicant should check the latest notification date and live application status rather than trusting an old summary.
The official verification sequence
First identify whether the connection is residential, RWA, commercial, industrial or another category. Then read the current PM Surya Ghar guidance and use the official national portal for the central application. Open the state energy agency or DISCOM page for the address and confirm net metering, sanctioned load, approved vendors, inspection, documents, meter charges and payment timing. Save the current notification or policy PDF. Ask the installer to put the assumed subsidy, tax treatment, equipment, approvals, generation estimate, warranty, maintenance and refund conditions in writing.
Use a calculator only for planning
The NoteMide calculator can compare bill, tariff, roof area, panel wattage and target-offset scenarios. It does not confirm a state subsidy, net-metering approval, structural safety, shadow study, transformer capacity, vendor registration or financing offer. Use PM Surya Ghar and the responsible state or DISCOM authority for the final decision.
